The Search for Living Waters

“My people are guilty of a double sin: they have abandoned me, the spring of living water, and they have dug for themselves cisterns - cracked systems that hold no water.” Jer. 2:13
By abandoning God, we have traded being filled with living water for a broken, useless cistern. When I say abandoned God, I mean we return to other things for fulfillment such as wealth, status, career and achievements. Turning to anything other than God for fulfillment is a form of idolatry. Idolatry is replacing the creator with created things. We must desire true fulfillment instead of leaky cisterns that leave us empty and spiritually thirsty.
In order to have His living water again, we must repair our cistern. First, we must locate the leak. Next, we identify the source of the leak. Next, we must examine the structure. Then we must dig and expose the leak. Clean the sin. Repair the cracks. Seal it and apply waterproofing.
Locate the leak - find the sin or idol in your life.
Identify the source - Is it wealth or status or career or your achievements?
Examine the structure - examine your heart to find where you are trying to get your fulfillment from.
Dig and expose - dig around in your heart and let God dig after you’re done digging and show you where you might still have a leak and where you are finding your fulfillment.
Clean the sin - let Him expose the affected area to you and ask Him for forgiveness.
Repair the leak or crack - turn away from broken cisterns and return to God and repent.
Seal it with your commitment.
And apply the waterproofing - read His Word daily and pray.
After we have repaired the broken cistern with His help, we can be filled with His living water again. Let us draw near to God and drink deeply of the fulfillment from the well of living water. “whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I shall give him will become in him a well of water springing up into eternal life.” John 4:14
