“A champion named Goliath came out of the Philistines camp. He was over 9 feet tall. He had a helmet, a coat of armor of bronze.” 1 Sam. 17:4
For 40 days, every morning, Goliath showed up and taunted and threatened the Israelites. Goliath was a problem they needed to face but he was fierce and bigger. Yet, by their lack of action, they were accepting the threats and doing nothing. Their fear was growing stronger. Their focus was on the giant in front of them, instead of how they could win with God on their side. Looking into the face of the giant and his threats, they were not brave.
One day, David showed up and Goliath came out with his usual threat. David said to the Israelites, “You have God on your side. Why don’t you just kill him?” They responded with “have you seen how big he is??” David said, I’ll go and fight him!” Saul told him he was just a boy and couldn’t fight. David told him he had killed both a lion and a bear who had gone after his flock. He said what he did to the lion and the bear, he could do to Goliath too. He said “let me fight the giant and I’ll show him who is bigger!” His willingness to fight was not a presumption of God’s favor but He knew the Lord fights with those who trust Him.
Saul had offered David his armor and said he could go ahead and try. David didn’t need what didn’t fit him. He only needed to hear the threat once to take care of what was facing them. He had faith and confidence in God, because of the wild animals he had killed in the past. He knew this was the same God that had fought with him before, and this same God would help him again! He only needed God to fight with him against the threat. “For the Lord your God is He who goes with you to fight against your enemies, to give you the victory.” Deut. 3:22
What is the enemy “threatening” you with today? Are you facing it bravely or waiting for someone else to “kill” your giant for you?? This past week I had the threat of cancer being back. I told myself I would “kill” it again. I killed that lion and bear before. I won twice before and I could do it again. Don’t let things you need to face linger in your mind. Face the threat! Focus on the victory!
David claimed victory ahead of the battle and shouted to Goliath “for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.” David did not have victory because he could shoot a sling with accuracy. He had victory because God was faithful and was with him. I beat cancer twice before not because of the doctors and the treatments but because God was on my side. Your skills and ability don’t matter until you have God on your side.
Remind yourself of how God helped you fight in the past and you won. He was on your side and will be again. Don’t worry about your giants strength; God is stronger than any of Goliaths ability. Claim your victory over your giants and threats and fight! The battle belongs to the Lord!
“No weapon (or threats) formed against you will prevail or succeed or prosper or be victorious.” Isaiah 54:17 No threat will prove superior over God and His Word!
