He is the Lighthouse in Your Storm

You hear the thunder rumbling in the distance first. It starts as a whisper and gets louder the closer it gets. The wind howls as it gets closer encircling you. The sounds are ominous of the storm to come. The storm arrives and violently stirs up the ocean waves. You hear and feel the waves smacking against the side of the lighthouse. In the midst of the storm of turmoil, there is the eye. The eye of the storm is in the center where there is stillness and quiet.

God is my lighthouse in that powerful storm who stands as a tower of strength to protect me in the eye of my worst storms. He helps me and others navigate through rough waters of storms. He navigates us to Him and protects us. He uses our storms to guide others. We become the lighthouse for others who are headed to the same “rocks” we hit or the same storms we have been through. We can’t rescue others always but we can guide them through.

This picture has always been a very powerful picture to me. I love lighthouses-have collected them and visited many, many all over several countries. They remind me of the scriptures of God being our refuge of strength-even in the worst storm. He is the one I run to when I feel the storms coming. He is my fortress and who I take refuge in. He is my strong tower!

“For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy” Psalm 61:3

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1

Life’s storms can be overwhelming at times. This picture says to me that we can stand firm, still and quiet in the center of life storms. No matter how loud or full of chaos the waves seem, He can quiet and calm the storm.

A lighthouse is a tower. A tower is a round or circular building or fortress raised to a high elevation. A lighthouse takes into account the curvature of the earth so it can see further away. God, as our lighthouse, is high and lifted up and can see further away. He can see the whole picture that we cannot see. Lighthouses serve as a guide to people so they reach their destination. God is my lighthouse guiding me to Him so when storms come, I am inside His “fortress” of strength. Because it is circular, it can stand up to high winds and forceful waves. When the force of the waves hit the lighthouse, it’s strength is dispersed around the curve of the building. Only a small section is being hit by the full force. In effect, it rolls off. When my life is centered on Him, the full force hits Him and rolls off of me. It doesn’t take me out. Nothing will ever take me out completely!

The person in this picture looks calm and like they’re enjoying the view. I’m sure there is a certain amount of anxiety and waiting for the dangerous, powerful waves to calm down. The storms in my life have definitely had some anxiety and my “not so patient” waiting for the waves to calm down.

This person has also not been taken out of the situation but kept safe in the midst of the storm. If you focus on the storm, you will eventually feel overwhelmed by what you’re looking at. If you just step into your lighthouse, you will know and feel God is with you. You are protected, not from the storm, but IN the storm.

None of us are lighthouse-keepers but we know He is the ultimate, strong lighthouse tower and keeper. “The Lord will KEEP you from all harm-He will watch over your life.” (Psalm 121:7-8) All we need to do is run to our tower of strength, take a deep breath and stand firm in the center of our storms.
