I Choose You

“Being chosen for something can make you feel special and valued. It can also be a sign that others recognize your talents or abilities."
When I was growing up and we had sports in school or a kickball game going in the neighborhood, leaders or team captains were chosen. Each captain took turns choosing who they wanted on their team. They went back-and-forth taking turns to choose their teammates. I had a reputation for not being good at sports and being quiet so I was always the last one chosen. Only I wasn’t really “chosen”. I was the one who the team got stuck with. The spotlight was shining on my inabilities, not who I was.
God isn’t like that at all! He is our captain who chose each one of us. He didn’t get “stuck” with me. He doesn’t get stuck with you either. He does not put the spotlight on our inabilities. He lets the light shine on me so I can see His greatness in all that I do.
He chose me. He chose you. To choose means to select freely or to have a preference for. He chose us. He prefers us.” Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen me (you) to be His treasured possession.” Deut. 14:2
Now that I’m here on earth; He’s already chosen me. “… For He chose me (us) in Him before the creation of the world…” Eph. 1:4
In our human nature, I think we struggle with wanting to be chosen by others and by Him. We also have things in our lives we must choose. Sometimes those things we must choose are hard to do. We choose friends, jobs, cars, spouses, and so on. We also chase after being chosen. We put forth effort to be chosen.
As much as we desire to be chosen, do we always choose God, daily? I have a desire for others to choose me but do I desire that God chooses me as much?
God calls each one of us to a purpose. He chooses each one of us specifically. Do we really understand He CHOSE me(us)? It was not a random pointing at a person and saying “you do it.” He chose us specifically. And when He chooses us, He is not “stuck” with us.
When God told Moses what to do in Exodus, Moses made excuses and basically said, “why me, choose somebody else!” God said, “So now, go. I am sending you to bring my people out of Egypt.” Ex. 3:10 “But Moses said to God, ‘who am I that I should go??’” Ex. 3:11 God tells Moses everything to say and do leaving him with no excuse to do what God chose him for. Moses still doesn’t like being chosen. “But Moses said, ‘pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else’.” Ex. 4:13 Moses didn’t understand he was uniquely qualified to do what God called him to do. God chose Moses. God wasn’t shining a spotlight on Moses’ inabilities. God wasn’t stuck with Moses because he “happened” to walk by the burning bush. God chose the burning bush to be purposely placed in front of Moses. God chose Moses in spite of his feelings of unworthiness. God can teach us best in our inabilities how much greater He is in us and how we can do greater things together.
When God chooses us and calls us, we are uniquely qualified to do what He chose for us to do. His calling on our lives gives us worthiness and ability. We are now qualified and He made us that way on purpose. The purpose is not in our inability or ability, but the purpose is to be obedient to God when He calls us.
We are now chosen to be on His team to fulfill a purpose. When He calls us and we follow through, we are a testimony and blessing. “You did not choose me, but I chose you so that you might go and bear fruit.” John 15:19
