“I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord. “ Ezekiel 37:6
I have been sick this week with major congestion making it difficult to breathe and to sleep. Most of my body is dry except my head and lungs. The things I need to breathe and function are struggling while the rest of me is dry.
As I was watching my humidifier work this morning, I saw the moisture regularly rising up in the air. I couldn’t really see it working but I knew the moisture was helping. It made me think of being dry like in the story of Ezekiel and the dry bones.
Being dried out is when your body doesn’t have the moisture it needs. Parts don’t want to function properly. It’s hard to function when we are “dry.” When you are in a desert, it is extremely dry. It’s hard to function in the desert. When you are in a spiritual desert, you are spiritually dry. You struggle to function. You become desperate for moisture and the water of life.
We know that humidity refers to the amount of water present in the air. A humidifier keeps that balance. My humidifier is adding water to the air in my room to dry out enough of my congestion to make breathing easier. I don’t want too much moisture in the air but I don’t want too much dryness either. I need a balance.
In a sense, God is my humidifier. As the living water, He is the moisture that I need to soak up to prevent dry bones and give me life in perfect balance.
When life is full of congestion and too much is going on and beginning to slow me down with its collection of “mucus”, why not go to my personal humidifier?
How does a humidifier work when turned on? My humidifier has a base reservoir. This is the source from which the humidifier pulls moisture that it will disperse into my room to help me breathe. God is my base reservoir. When I pray, read, and/or worship, I am pulling moisture for my life into my body. The humidifier also has a fan that helps distribute the moisture into the room to keep it at the proper humidity level. The Holy Spirit is the fan that helps move moisture through my life to help me get the proper humidity level that keeps me functioning and full of life.
In Ezekiel 37:4, Ezekiel is told to prophesy to the physical bones. In verse 7, he’s told to prophesy to the breath (source of life) “so that they may live.” We can turn on the physical humidifier to get it running but it won’t do any good to run it if there’s no water in it. You must fill it from a source of water. “And as I was prophesying there was a noisy rattling sound and the bones came together… But there was no breath (or life) in them.”
We must FIRST fill our reservoir regularly with Him in order for him to be able to breathe life into us. “come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into the slain, that they may live. So I prophesied and breath entered them and they came to life and stood up on their feet.”
We must fill up, turn on the machine and regularly, consistently soak in the moisture so that we may have life.
By keeping the moisture in my body, my head and lungs become clearer and I am prevent my “bones” from totally drying out. By keeping the living water in our lives, it keeps our heart, mind and soul clearer and prevents us from drying out. Go to Him bone dry and He’ll supply you with living water and bring you out alive!
