What’s In Your Closet?

With warmer weather moving in, I like to clean out my closet. I get rid of jackets, dresses, boots, sweaters, and anything dark as Winter. My plan is to refill it with what is more appropriate for the season I am currently in.
I can’t show you my closet because it’s a mess and full of things I don’t need- things I can’t or won’t get rid of. To me, messiness is a sign of chaos. is my life in chaos? Is my closet so full of the past and so messy that I can’t clean it and make room for something new? Are there things hidden that need to come out??
What is the definition of a closet? It’s a place where you conceal your things in private or only show to a few people. How about a spiritual closet? A spiritual closet is where you can hide or only show parts of yourself to a few people. There is clutter amongst your treasures. We all have it. Spiritual clutter can fill every open space so there’s no room left for God. Cleaning your spiritual closet out is as important as your closet in your bedroom. Getting rid of clutter is necessary!
What’s in your closet? What’s in your spiritual closet? Do you have the clutter of shame, guilt, selfishness, unforgiveness, gossip, fear, insecurity??? What’s in there you hope God can’t see? (Ha!) What’s in there you don’t want others to see? Is your closet so full of the past that you can’t make room for new? Is it so messy, there is chaos? I would like my closet to be organized. I would like it to be full of new things. I would like to be able to show others my closet and not feel ashamed. I would like there to always be a little room for new and for a little something more. What would you like your closet to look like?
Closets can look like whatever season you are in. What season are you in? Dark winter or vibrant, new spring? The important thing is not the season but that you get rid of what is unnecessary and leave room for more. Let God supply you with new things in different seasons. The source of where your old items came from doesn’t necessarily matter; it no longer fits your current season. It no longer fits who you are or who you are becoming so toss it. As a Christian, what’s in our closet from the past doesn’t matter. We are “fitted” for something new.
How do you clean out your spiritual closet and bring it into order? Pray about what needs to go. The Holy Spirit can help you decide what needs to go. Face items one at a time. Is it affecting your spiritual walk? For the good or the bad? What unnecessary items are in there just taking up space? What is falling apart and needs to be made new? Take what doesn’t belong in your life anymore or affects your walk in a negative way, squash it in that big black bag, tie it up tight, and toss it into the great abyss. Don’t EVER sneak it into a “save for later” box! Whatever the Holy Spirit decides needs to go, needs to stay gone!
“We do not have the excuse of ignorance, everything connected with that old way of life has to go. It’s rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life – in God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces His character in you.” (MSG)
Our goal in cleaning out our closet is always having room for Him. It forces us to look at whatever is in there, what I already have, and what needs to go so that I have room for more of Him. If you want to improve your spiritual life, clean our your closet. Often it’s what we hold onto that holds us back. “If anyone is in Christ, He is a new creature; the old things have passed away; behold new things have come.” 2 Cor. 5:17 Let the Holy Spirit fill your spiritual closet with the perfect wardrobe-“love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness.”
